Islamic clerics led by the Shahi Imam of Delhi's Jama Masjid, Maulana Ahmed Bukhari came out in support of madrassa teacher Mufti Abu Bashar, arrested for his involvement in serial bombings in Ahmedabad on 26th July 2008, and demanded the government stop "undue harassment of Muslims".
Joined by Samajwadi Party leader Abu Asim Azmi, MP from Mumbai, Bukhari virtually sounded a bugle of revolt against what he termed the "anti-Muslim" policies of the Indian investigating agencies. Azmi hails from a village that adjoins Bashar's native village Bina Para in Sarai Meer ara of Azamgarh district.
Like in Kashmir, where separatists are openly shouting pro-independence slogs, the protest rally on the Lucknow-Azamgarh highway which drew at least around 6000 people, kept the road blocked for hours while raising anti-police and anti-government slogans.
Bukhari went to the extent of issuing a warning, "If the government does not take early measures to bring an end to undue harassment of Muslims who are indiscriminately labeled as terrorists, this country is in for another partition; So let us be prepared for nation wide riots and violence."
If the terrorists in India happen to be Muslims, what can any Government do ? Should the Government agencies and courts leave the muslims scot free to continue the terror on the streets of India ?
In Kashmir and elsewhere, the muslims are voicing the secessionist bugle. It its not checked and the secessionist, separatists, terrorists are not handled with a iron fist, India may soon face a 1947 like situation. This time India may not get partitioned, but get engaged in a civil war.
